MY GOOD MOOD FROM SYL referring to me as ‘partner’ soured when I stopped by Hy-Vee for cat food, litter, and milk.

A warbly woman’s voice called, “Melanie. I’m surprised to see you here.” Eliza Wright pushed a grocery cart containing only a can of soup.

“Hello, Eliza. Pretty full cart there.”

Her intent gaze indicated she would not be deterred. “I’m surprised you aren’t at Tom Dodson’s funeral.”

As if that’s your business. “Could be the same reason you aren’t. I didn’t really know Tom that well. And I thought it would be easier for Janet and her daughter not to see the woman who found Tom that night.”

She leaned across the handle of her cart. “I don’t think Janet and her daughter will be the only two women in town missing him.”

I pulled a bag of dry cat food off the shelf. “Seems as if you could wait until at least the day after the funeral before starting a rumor.”

Her mouth opened and shut very fast. “I was simply pointing out that he would be missed.”

“Uh-huh.” I moved away a few feet, then Mister Tibbs’ image crossed my mind. “Any thoughts on a particular woman?”

She literally huffed. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“You’re right. I don’t need to know.”

Keeping her mouth shut when someone seemed uninterested appeared to be too much of a challenge for Eliza. “You might think about who left the company. I hear Janet Dodson insisted on some changes.”

I didn’t want to respond, so I stared at Eliza until she dropped her eyes.
